The Solana Generating Station is demonstrating how solar can continue to be a big factor. The facility uses concentrating solar power technology, which means it can store up heat even as a cloud goes over. Located 70 miles southwest of Phoenix, Ariz., the plant supplies power to homes under contract with Arizona Public Service. Although photovoltaic technology is currently more cost-efficient, concentrating solar technology may become a larger factor in the future of renewable energy since it can enable utilities to benefit from more flexibility.
